Apple Working on a Fix for For Apple Watch Series 3 Unknown Wi-Fi Connection Issue

The Verge reports Apple is looking into a fix for a network connectivity issue with the Apple Watch Series 3 with LTE. The device reportedly may stay connected to an unknown Wi-Fi network with no internet connectivity, preventing the device from using its LTE cellular connection.

Apple Working on a Fix for For Apple Watch Series 3 Unknown Wi-Fi Connection Issue

Lauren Goode reports her Apple Watch Series 3 review unit, supplied by Apple, would “try to connect to unknown WiFi networks instead of connecting to cellular, when I was out and about without my phone. ”

When she contacted Apple about the issue, they sent her another Watch, but she also experienced the issue with the new unit. The company told her they are looking into a fix for the issue.

Eventually, the company issued an official statement, acknowledging the issue. “We have discovered that when Apple Watch Series 3 joins unauthenticated Wi-Fi networks without connectivity, it may at times prevent the watch from using cellular,” an Apple spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “We are investigating a fix for a future software release.”

In her Apple Watch Series 3 review, Goode said that the watch would sometime connect to an unknown Wi-Fi network showing a mere one bar of signal strength, remaining on that network instead of switching over to LTE.

On more than one occasion, I detached myself from the phone, traveled blocks away from my home or office, and watched the Watch struggle to connect to LTE. It would appear to pick up a single bar of some random Wi-Fi signal, and hang on that, rather than switching to LTE.

While Apple said it will attempt to fix the issue in a future update of the watchOS 4 operating system, but did not offer up a possible date for the fix.

Kuo: Apple Watch Series 3 Sales “Significantly Stronger” Than Expected, iPhone Customers Holding Out for iPhone X

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo sent a note to investors on Monday, saying demand for Apple’s flagship iPhone X appears to be cannibalizing iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus preorders. He also notes sales of the Apple Watch Series 3 are “significantly stronger” than expected.

Kuo: Apple Watch Series 3 Sales "Significantly Stronger" Than Expected, iPhone Customers Holding Out for iPhone X

While preorders of new iPhones traditionally sell out soon after preorders kickoff, many models of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus were available for delivery on launch day, and many models are still showing availability for launch day pickup in Apple retail stores.

Kuo believes iPhone 8 sales are suffering because many customers are waiting for the release of the iPhone X, later this fall. Demand for the new flagship phone, due to launch in November is expected to be strong.

Historically, it takes 3-6 weeks or more to ship new iPhone models after they are available for preorder, due to initial tight supply and robust demand. However, our latest review indicates it will take less than 1-2 weeks for the iPhone 8. We believe this is because there is a strong likelihood that iPhone X demand will cannibalize iPhone 8 pre-orders.

Kuo: Apple Watch Series 3 Sales "Significantly Stronger" Than Expected, iPhone Customers Holding Out for iPhone X

Kuo also told investors that sales of the LTE version of the Apple Watch Series 3 was “significantly stronger” than expected, perhaps due to the fact the model goes for only $70 more than the Wi-Fi-only version of the watch.

Before the media event, we forecasted the production weighting of the GPS + Cellular version would be 30-40%. However, the pre-order website shows shipments of this version are taking much longer than those of the GPS version (3-4 weeks, from shipments launch day of September 22). We estimate the preorder weighting of the GPS + Cellular version is 80-90%.

Supplies of the Apple Watch Series 3 with LTE models began selling out within 15 minutes of when preorders began on Friday, September 15 at 12:01a.m. Delivery estimates now show three to four weeks, and no in-store pickup is currently available.

What To Expect From The Apple Watch Series 3 Battery Life

The Apple Watch Series 3 battery life is said to last up to 18 hours, but this time frame will vary depending on the user’s daily activities, and which Watch Series 3 you have.

Depending on which Apple Watch 3 you purchase will determine the amount of battery longevity, Many factors involved such as daily usage, and configuration, will all play a key factor in the user’s battery life. Expect the Watch Series 3 with LTE connection to have a shorter battery span, and for the battery to drain faster. The cellular connection without the iPhone will only last 1 hour of talk time, whereas with the iPhone expect about 3 hours of talk time.

For workout time indoors and outdoors using the LTE and GPS connection, expect about 4 hours of battery life. Without LTE,  you can estimate to have an additional hour of workout time, so expect about 5 hours. If you have the Apple Watch without LTE, the average battery time will be up to 10 hours.

For Audio playback using the Watch Series 3 via Bluetooth, paired with an iPhone, users can expect up to 10 hours, considering other varying factors, so actual results will vary.

Apple states that the Watch Series 3 will charge up to 80 percent in an hour and 30 minutes, and will charge to 100 percent in two hours. The Apple Watch Series 3 price starts at $329 for the Series 3 GPS, and $399 for the GPS + Cellular. Depending on the watchband, the cost can go up to $749.  The Watch Series 3 will be available for purchase on September 22. To order visit: Apple.com
