Back in 2015, Apple introduced a feature called Live Photos that let users take mini videos/moving photos. Recently, Apple has decided to introduce a JavaScript API to support Live Photos for develops to use on websites.

Developers will now be able to add Live Photos as a DOM element just as if they were to add a video or photo on their website. Developers will be given the option to control how long they want the media to play or to only play when users hover over the “LIVE” button.

“This new JavaScript-based API makes it easy to embed Live Photos on your websites. In addition to enabling Live Photos on iOS and macOS, you can now let users display their Live Photos on the web.”

The LivePhotosKit JS API is now available on NPM with code samples shared in the API reference. The first website to introduce Live Photos was Tumblr last year, some have reported that Tumblr inspired Apple to build its own API for developers.
