Apple Applies For Foldable iPhone Patent

Recently, the US Patent & Trademark Office published a patent application from Apple that shows a foldable iPhone that could be made in the future.

This most recent patent that Apple has applied for covers an electronic device having a flexible portion that will allow the device to be folded. It seems the device may also have a foldable display, the display may have a bending region that could allow the display to bend at what is called a bend axis when the device is folded.

It seems the device may have a flexible display layer, as well as a cover layer, a support layer, and a polarized layer. It could have a touch sensor interposed between the flexible display layer, and the touch sensor could include layers of optically clear adhesive which is flexible and bendable with water vapor penetration reducing addictive, anti-corrosion additive, ultraviolet-light blocking addictive, and index-of-refraction adjustment additive. Reports are stating that Apple would like to make the support layer formed from shape memory alloy or amorphous metal which could allow for an opening to facilitate bending of the display along the bend axis.

This isn’t the first patent indicating that Apple may be interested in making a foldable iPhone. Back in 2016, Apple applied for the patent application, it seems that not only Apple is interested in producing a foldable device, but also Samsung and LG. Reports are stating both have supposedly already started ahead of Apple in developing a future foldable device.
