Apple is once again resisting law enforcement attempts to force them to provide access to locked iOS devices, saying that it would be “impossible” to do so on the vast majority of iPhones and iPads. The company claims that because of security measures put in place with iOS 8 and iOS 9, 90% of devices are inaccessible without the device passcode, even for Apple.
As for the other 10%, Apple wants to keep those secure as well so as not to threaten the relationship between Apple and its customers. From Reuters:
“Forcing Apple to extract data in this case, absent clear legal authority to do so, could threaten the trust between Apple and its customers and substantially tarnish the Apple brand,” Apple’s lawyers wrote.
All of this comes as part of yet another request by the U.S. Department of Justice for Apple to provide device access to law enforcement. Apple has, in recent years, taken a notably strong stance on privacy, particularly in the wake of revelations regarding government surveillance in 2013. Apple has also spoken out against measures that would require it to leave back doors in its systems that would theoretically only be accessible to government agencies.
